There are basically two different types of equipment available for administering colonics, open systems and closed systems. There are many different manufactures of colonic equipment, but all systems either open or closed. Before deciding to have a colonic it is helpful to understand the basic differences between the two equipment types.
Open System
The open system is very gentle and safe . The open system affords the patient or client privacy and is very comfortable because the rectal tube is approximately the diameter of a drinking straw and only about 2 inches of the tube is inserted . At InSideOutZen the client lays comfortably on his or her back, fully covered with cotton sheet, large T-Shirt and socks are offered. After receiving the initial guidance and operating instructions the client is in control of the colonic if they opt for complete privacy. Once most clients understand how comfortable and safe the procedure is they usually proceed to read or listen to their I-pod. The procedure usually takes about 55 minutes unless the client wants to book more colonic time. After the procedure the client is able to wash up, dress and return to the waiting area to continue with additional questions or concerns if necessary. The client is free to return to work, the gym or whatever their plans are for the day.
Closed System
Conventional closed systems require a therapist to insert a fairly large speculum into the client’s rectum and then attack a disposable hose. A pressurized stream of water is then delivered through the attached hose. When the colon is filled and pressure is reaches maximum levels the therapist manually drains the colon back through the hose, Water pressure and temperature within the colon must be monitored constantly to avoid leakage or perforation, requiring constant attention of the therapist. The patient or client should NEVER be left alone. The closed system is the preferred choice for clients who have spinal injuries or disabilities or other conditions causing a loss of the anal sphincter muscle.

Immediately following your colonic you may feel slightly light on your feet or hungry. Please eat a balanced light meal, or a nutritious smoothie to add glucose, vitamins and minerals back into your body. If possible take probiotics such as yogurt, activia, kefir or supplements to replace friendly bacteria. You can continue with your usual daily activities, work, gym, walking, running or whatever you need to accomplish. Drink plenty fluids, rest if necessary. Be cautious with alcohol. You will notice the following day you cannot consume the same amount of food. That's a good thing. The more colonics you do the less food you can consume.
